R St James asked:

Are you looking for ways to save a marriage because your marriage is in trouble? Are you and your husband not in agreement over whether you should work or not?

Believe it or not, this type of confrontation, while seemingly small and not that significant, can be huge.

My friend was in a similar circumstance. “Lisa” and her husband started a family when she was in her mid 30s. Before that she had worked various jobs in the administrative field. When their daughter was born, and while she was small, Lisa decided to stay home to care for her. “Matt”, her husband, encouraged this and actually encouraged her to stay home as a full-time mother. Of course he then got used to getting off work and arriving home with a clean house to greet him, the laundry done, and dinner on the table.

He had it made in the shade.

But hey, Lisa was enjoying the arrangement as well, and looking for ways to save a marriage was far from her mind.

In her spare time, she did some volunteer work, cultivated some hobbies, and did some work around the house, mostly gardening.

Eventually though, since my friend has a college degree, she did want to return to work to possibly a part-time job. Her husband just went ballistic. It escalated to such a degree that she went to live with her sister for a while.

While she was gone, Matt realized that it would be better for her to work than to be living elsewhere but the issue almost split them up.

So what can you do if you are in this situation? Moving out is a drastic step, but try sitting down with your spouse and making a list of all the positives and negatives of working.

Also, be very open and honest about how you feel.

When looking for ways to save a marriage, the first thing you will probably find is there has been a major breakdown of communication and I believe that this is first thing to work on to get things back on the right track.
